About The Saints Peter and Fevronia Church
The Saints Peter and Fevronia Church is recreated in the historical place and is included in one complex with the monastery hotel.
March 8, 2013, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia committed the ceremony of laying of the capsule in the foundation of the Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom Chapel-Church. This Chapel-Church was historically existed outside the monastery and was destroyed during hard times.
On February 27, 2014, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the Saints Peter and Fevronia Church was consecrated by the Archbishop of Sergiyev Posad Feognost.
On June 6, 2016, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the chairman of the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism, the vicar of the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, archbishop of Sergiyev Posad performed the rite of consecration the first in Moscow church of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom and committed first Divine Liturgy in the Temple.
His Eminence has been served by the Deputy Chairman of the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism, Archimandrite Stefan (Tarakanov) and the clerics of the Intercession Monastery.
The service has attended by the Mother Superior of the Intercession Monastery, the Abbess Pheophania (Miskina), with her sisters, the inmates of the orphanage at Intercession (Pokrovsky) Monastery, the guests of the monastery.
Prince Peter of Murom and his wife Fevronia, who are the heavenly patrons of the temple, are the only ones that were canonized by the Orthodox Church for their fidelity to each other in married life.
The saint’s life is amazing: St. Peter was the prince’s son, while St. Fevronia was a commoner. She has healed the prince by her wisdom and also shared her life with him.
Time has come, and Peter took over the city of Murom. Boyars respected the Prince, but haughty boyar wives disliked Fevronia. They did not want to have a peasant woman over them. They urged their husbands to run her out of the town.
“Let her go and take what she wants with her!”, they demanded.
“May I take my husband with me?”, asked Fevronia. The boyars got confused, but they did not impede. The spouses went into exile together. The Prince was depressed: what lies ahead in a foreign land? A wise wife consoled him:
“The Lord is gracious and will arrange everything!”
So it happened, they did not have long to be out of favor: soon Murom sent an embassy, begging Peter to come back to the reign. Boyars had a falling out over power, shed blood and now again seek peace and tranquility.
Peter and Fevronia came back with humility to their city and reigned happily ever after, showing mercy with prayer in their hearts.
Having reached the old age, they became mons with the names of David and Euphrosyne and begged God to die at one time. They bequeathed to bury them together in a specially prepared coffin with a thin partition in the middle.When Peter felt that he was dying, he sent a novice to a neighboring monastery to his wife. At this time, Fevronia embroidered the air with golden embroidery (coverlet for the chalice).
“Have him wait, I need to finish,” Fevronia asked to convey. After a while, the novice again came running with the message that her husband was dying. And again Fevronia asked him to wait … And when the messenger said for the third time that the prince was taking away, Fevronia made the last stitch, stuck a needle in sewing and “fell silent forever”.
They died in one day and at one hour, each in their monastic cell. People considered godless to bury monks in one coffin and dared to break the will of the deceaseds. Twice their bodies were carried to different temples, but twice they miraculously appeared nearby. So, they finally remain in the common grave forever in the yard of the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin, and every believer found a generous healing here.
July 8, one of the days of the memory of the saints, is declared the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.
The Great Sacraments are performed in the Saints Peter and Fevronia Church, such as christening and weddings.
Christening is the first Sacrament by which the Church meets people who come to God. This is a spiritual birth, and as a man is born once, the Sacrament of Christening cannot be repeated.
By the Christening, a person mysteriously dies out of sins and passions, denying them and resurrects with Christ for a new life leading to the eternity.
Even the newborn carries the burden of the original sin, which our forefather Adam has sinned, not to mention adults. Christening cleanses the person from all his sins, voluntary and involuntary. After the Baptismal font, the soul comes out renewed and epiphanic.
The newly baptized gains two spiritual protectors on the heaven. First, his own guardian angel and, second, the saint whose name he was baptized with. The newly baptized can also get two “earthly” patrons – the godfather and the godmother.
After Christening, a person has a new celebration – the Angel Day. Usually, it’s the feast day of the saint after whom he was named.
