Blessing of Matronushka

After the death of Matrona, by her will, she was buried at Danilov Monastery’s cemetery in order to “hear the service” (as it was one of the few working Moscow churches).

More than thirty years after the death of Matrona, her grave at Danilov Monastery’s cemetery became one of the holy places of Orthodox Moscow. It became the place for people from all parts of Russia and from abroad to come and beg for the help with troubles and illnesses.

On March 8, 1998 the appropriation of the holy relics of the Blessed Matrona took place ( with Patriarch Alexei II (Ridiger) presiding)

At the request of the nuns of the Moscow Pokrovsky (Convent of the Holy Intercession of the Mother of God), who cared for her grave, the relics were transferred to that Convent. From then on the Convent has become a site of pilgrimage for people not only all across Russia, but from all over the world. The nuns carefully collect and write down all testimonies of miraculous help received by people from the Blessed Matrona. The access to relics is open daily from 7am (Sunday from 6am) to 8pm.

In addition to the relics, the Intercession (Pokrovsky) Monastery has two icons of St. Matrona: one is large, placed on the wall of the main church of the Intercession of Blessed Virgin Mary, another one is in the temple itself. Places next to the both icons always full of fresh flowers, the flow of people does not stop. Matrona strengthens all those who seek help in faith, teaches us to trust the Lord Jesus Christ, shows how to close our physical eyes and open up the inner spiritual eye to listen to His will. In a sense, she guides us so that our soul can see the spiritual, heavenly world.

There is a custom to bring fresh flowers to the relics of Blessed Matrona. The aisle next to the relics is always full of splendid bouquets and flowers. The offering of ones becomes a gift for others, as sisters give one or few flowers to each relics visitor. These flowers were previously consecrated on the relics. Visitors usually dry those flowers and put them near the icons.

The newlyweds pass to the relics and icons of Saint Matrona out of turn, in order to venerate and receive the blessing. The marriage, consecrated by Saint Matrona, will be strong and blessed!
